Training for a Half Marathon

Many people want to complete a marathon but some prefer to complete a half marathon first, some even want to do it as part of their marathon training. So what is the difference between training for a half marathon and a full marathon.

Well training for a half marathon obviously means you dont have to run as far. So the distance is going to be shorter. Which means your training will consist of shorter distance runs but you still will need to put in the hard work. When training for a half marathon you must set out a correct training program you can follow and stick to it.

Training for a half marathon requires dedication and discipline. You will need to set aside time each week when you are training for a half marathon. Write it out and make sure that those hours are free and dont book anything in that time. When you are training for a half marathon you need to be strong and let other people know about it, if something conflicts with your marathon training schedule make sure that you stick to your training and reorganise whatever it is that is causing the conflict when you are training for a half marathon.
Training for a half marathon consists of training sessions five days a week with two rest days. Typically these rest days will be on a Monday and Friday while the rest of the days will be when you are actually training for a half marathon. When you have setup a basis like this you will find it easier to stick to. Training for a half marathon like this will have you doing your short to medium runs on week days and your long run on the Saturday.

On Sundays you will do some form of cross training. Cross training is a very important part when training for a half marathon because it helps to prevent over use injuries and helps with recovery. Some good cross training exercises are walking, swimming or riding a bike. It is a good idea to include the cross training session the day after your long run while you are training for a half marathon because it gives the body a break from running and helps to quicken recovery.

Training for a half marathon is a great way to prepare for a full marathon. You still go through the same time type of training and experiences it is just not as much as you would with a full marathon. Training for a half marathon can also be for the people who only want to compete in half marathons and try and better their times each half marathon they complete. For some people the distance of a half marathon suits them better than a full marathon also when training for a half marathon people can find it easier to find the time to train. So all in all training for a half marathon is a fantastic rewarding experience.

What Every Exercise-hater Must Know About Marathon Walking

The word marathon is meant to inspire terror. It's a 26.2 mile run that takes even super athletes hours to complete. You can't just sign up and do a marathon. You have to train rigorously to even have a hope of finishing. So why do some people think this is fun?

Yet a growing movement is occurring around the world that allows more and more people the opportunity to participate in marathons and other races by walking and not running. Walking is a much lower stress activity than running or even jogging.

Walking marathons allows for people of all ages, particularly older people, to enjoy the health benefits of marathon training.

And mile for mile, walking burns the same calories as running. So why don't more people walk marathons?

First, not all marathons are open to walkers and some permit walkers but do not officially encourage them. Marathons that invite walkers are sometimes advertised as "walker friendly." (Not all of them are!)

The biggest concern for marathon walkers who participate in official races is how long the track is open. A top runner completes a marathon in slightly over two hours. Most reasonably good athletes can do a marathon in four hours. Even slower runners can complete a marathon in five or six hours. (A six-hour marathon time means the runner ran 13 minute miles ... not exactly a super-fast time!) However, walkers need six to eight hours to complete a marathon. Walking consistent 15-minute miles, it would take a little over six-and-a-half hours to walk a marathon. Factor in some bathroom breaks, inconsistent performance, or slower walking times and you end up with marathon walkers who turn in times of seven or eight hours.

Most marathons keep the track open six hours. After that, they begin to "sweep" or start at the beginning of the track and pick up stragglers, the injured, and the clean up the mess at water stations.

While walkers can dodge the sweepers for a while, eventually the walkers will be compelled to leave the track and the marathon unfinished.
The Los Angeles Marathon is known for being super-friendly to walkers because the track is open long enough for even slow walkers to complete the race before getting "swept up."

In some ways, walkers face the same training challenges as runners. It takes consistent training over a period of many months to build up the stamina and technique required to go 26.2 miles at once.

Training programs for walkers tend to be sporadic and are not always offered in groups training to enter a marathon. When walking programs are available, there may be only a few participants and no real experts at walking technique.

Marathon walkers also face their own unique challenges. Although a very fast elite walker can actually out-pace a slow runner, most walkers are on the track and exercising longer than the runners. That means they need to allow extra time, extra hydration and even some food. It is not unusual for marathon walkers to bring along packets of bars, gels, or liquids to take in along the way. Bathroom breaks are also more necessary during a six or seven hour period of exercise than for those who can do the course in much shorter times.

The best training program for walkers involves consistent training over a period of about six months or more before the race.

Every week, the walker should go out four times in "maintenance walks" that start out at 30 minutes and gradually extend to full hours. Once a week, there should be a "long walk." This can start out at 15 or 30 minutes; the walker should add 15 minutes more each week until the walk is about 1 hour and 45 minutes long.

During these initial weeks, walkers should learn good form and technique and only concentrate on time, not speed or distance. Obviously, it's a good idea to gradually try to improve speed, but the main focus is doing the time.

After 1 hour and 45 minutes, it's time to switch over to distance. At this point, long walks are measured in miles, starting with 6 miles and adding a mile a week until the walks get up to 10 or 11 miles.

At this point, marathon walkers should defer to training manuals for marathon runners. A very crucial skill that marathoners must learn is how to add six more miles to the distance. This means one week the long walk is 10 miles, the next week it's 16. The following week it's back to 10, then the next week to 11, and then it's 17 miles.

This pattern is important, because it drills into the marathoner a very important confidence and ability: the ability to go six more miles, no matter what.

Once the long walk hits 20 miles, that's an important marker in training. No long walk during training should ever exceed 20 miles. However, before taking on a race, a marathon walker should have done at least three long walks of 20 miles.

A few weeks before the actual race, training ramps down. Walks get shorter. While the walker maintains a consistent schedule of four hour-long, fairly fast maintenance walks a week, the "long walks" dwindle down to a mere 10 or 12 miles.

On race day, the newbie marathon walker faces his or her first 26.2 mile walk. But he or she has learned two vital skills: the ability to go 20 miles with confidence and the ability to be able to go six more miles no matter what. The last 0.2 miles that makes up the marathon is run on adrenalin and crowd noise. To be able to participate in a marathon, a training schedule should be set up to map onto race day. Once a marathon walker is fully in training, he or she can easily modify the schedule to accommodate other races during the year. In fact, many people get so addicted to marathon walking that they do four, five or more races a year.

Improve Running Performance with P90X

Chances are you've seen or heard of P90X. The programs developer, Tony Horton is everywhere from radio and print ads to QVC and infomercial land discussing the benefits of P90X. Mention it to anyone and chances are they know what or who your talking about. You may have wondered if this program is beneficial for runners, or more specifically if it would be beneficial for you.

Opinions are numerous and varied. A search on popular running site forums will give opinions ranging from "It's a total waste of time for runners" to I know someone who (or I) tried the program and it seemed awfully hard", to " It's the greatest thing ever (I don't know why it would benefit you)". Let's attempt to evaluate the program for runners based on its merits.

The workout program includes 12 different workouts that are structured over 90 days. Most workouts are around an hour with the exception of the yoga day that is about 90 minutes. The workouts use free weights or bands and a pull up bar. They are rotated throughout the 12 weeks, which I will elaborate on later. I will segment them according to their relevance to running;

Group A: 1-Chest and Back, 2- Shoulders and Arms, 3- Chest, Shoulder, and Triceps, 4- Back and Biceps.

Group B: 1-Legs and Back, 2- KenpoX, 3- X- Stretch, and 4- Ab Ripper X.

Group C: 1- Plyometrics, 2-YogaX, 3- Core Synergistics, 4-Cardio X.

At first glance, Group A which includes workouts consisting primarily of push ups, pull ups, and various arm, chest and back exercises would seem to have little relevance to running. While these workouts would not typically be considered essential for runners, it's important to remember that they do develop upper body strength which minimizes fatigue and stiffness in the shoulders and arms which allows you to maintain better form and run faster and more efficiently, especially over longer distances. The benefits of general strength/cross training have been well documented in recent years. This is also especially important as a runner ages and they lose muscle mass and their body composition changes. Strength /Cross training will help slow down that process.

Group B exercises have some specific benefits for runners and will be discussed in greater detail. 1/ Legs and back are a series of 8 circuits that generally include an upper leg, lower leg and pull-up or weight exercise. These include lunges, squats, calf raises and several that are plyometric/yoga oriented. 2/ Kenpo is a kick boxing workout that includes kicking and punching. 3/ X- Stretch is an overall stretching workout that will help keep you limber and flexible. 4/ Ab Ripper X- 16-minute abs/core workout that usually accompanies the strength training workout 3 days week.

Group C includes workouts that would be beneficial to most runners and include the following:

1/ Plyometrics contains an assortment of jumps, squats. leaps and other movement exercises to develop leg strength, explosiveness and cardio. 2/ Yoga is a 90-minute workout but the benefits to runners should not be discounted. The initial 45 minutes includes mostly movement exercises that will improve balance, strength, flexibility and overall fitness. The last 45 minutes focus on overall stretching with particular benefits to hamstrings, quads, hips, calves, and feet as well as upper body. Although the time commitment is a consideration, this exercise will improve all areas of fitness and performance. You will notice changes from the first week. 3/ Core synergistics is an overall workout with primary focus on the core area. The benefits of core exercises have also recently been well documented. This workout includes push ups, lunges, squats, rolls and other core related movements. 4/ Cardio X includes a mixture of yoga, kenpo, plyo, and core synergistics exercises meant a s a supplement for additional overall cardio development.

There are 3 variations of schedules, classic, lean and doubles. Each variation has a set schedule for 3 weeks, a rest week, and then a modification where some new workouts are used. This affords the "muscle confusion" referred to in the advertisements. In other words, by modifying the workouts you avoid a "plateau" effect.

The question most runners ask is whether they would become better runners by incorporating it into their running program or by doing more running specific exercises. There is not a right answer for everyone, but there are some training principles that should be taken into consideration.

For the purposes of this article lets segment runners into 2 very broad categories, those who run primarily for fitness and those who run competitively. I would refer to fitness runners as those who run primarily because they enjoy it and it helps them keep in shape. They may occasionally enter races, but their primary focus is not on race times or place. Competitors would be more inclined to follow a running schedule incorporating various types of training with performance based goals typically in the form of races throughout the year.

Would P90X benefit either type of runner?

I believe both types of runners would benefit from a strong foundation of fitness, which enables them to train more efficiently. Failure in building your foundation will typically lead to 1 of 2 things, either you'll lack the fitness to train to your potential and plateau, or you'll create an imbalance that will lead to injury. The program will target your muscle growth, strength, power, as well as balance and flexibility. Runners who only run or do run oriented exercises tend to have overdeveloped hamstrings and calves and underdeveloped quads, shins and upper bodies. P90X will even out your fitness.

The fitness runner will benefit by being stronger and more efficient as well as having improved overall fitness. It is a good base exercise in place of running for a period of time or as part of a modified schedule. When they return to running they will need to redevelop some of their aerobic fitness, but this will come back quickly with their improved overall fitness. This schedule can be implemented in cold weather when getting outside can be difficult and indoor running can be tedious. Fitness runners will also benefit from a small break in running and stressing other body parts. They may find a renewed passion for full time running when they return.

Fitness runners who want to lose weight would benefit from the classic schedule as resistance training and aerobic development will assist in losing weight. If you're fairly fit, the lean version will focus more on strength without mass and explosive cardio. Please note that all strength exercises offer options for those interested in more fitness than mass.

For the competitive runner using a modified schedule would provide a strong foundation for increased performance. Most competitive runners would benefit from a reduction in running for a period of time while establishing a stronger base as part of a periodized schedule. Unfortunately most competitive runners without a coach don't use a periodized schedule where their training is laid out in phases. In the absence of a periodized schedule, runners tend to adapt to their training and plateau. A periodized running schedule like the periodized P90X schedule will stress certain segments, allow recovery and then stress other segments to fit into overall fitness.

If you structure it into an off season or pre-base training segment of your training begin with the classic structure with little to no running for the first 3 weeks. This would include the following;

Block 1; WEEKS 1-3 Day 1- Chest and Back, Ab Ripper X (ARX) Day 2- Plyometrics Day 3- Shoulders and Arms, ARX Day 4- Yoga X Day 5- Legs and Back, ARX Day 6- Kenpo Day 7- Rest or X Stretch.

Recovery Week; Day 1- Core Synergistics Day 2- Plyometrics Day 3- Yoga X Day 4- Legs and Back Day 5- Core Synergistics Day 6- Easy Run and X Stretch/Yoga Day 7- Rest or X Stretch.

Block 2; WEEKS 5-7 Day 1- Chest, Shoulders and Triceps, ARX, Easy Run Day 2- Plyometrics Day 3- Back and Biceps, ARX, Easy Run Day 4- Yoga X Day 5- Legs and Back, ARX Day 6- Longer Run and X Stretch Day 7- Rest/X-Stretch

Recovery Week Day 1- Core Synergistsics Day 2- Run and X Stretch Day 3- Yoga X Day 4- Run and X Stretch Day 5- Core Synergistics Day 6- Run and X Stretch or Yoga X Day 7- Rest/X Stretch

Block 3; WEEKS 9 & 11 Day 1- Chest and Back, ARX, Run Day 2- Plyometrics and Easy Run Day 3- Shoulders and Arms, ARX, Run Day 4- Yoga X Day 5- Legs and Back, ARX, easy run Day 6- Run and X Stretch Day 7- Rest/ X Stretch

Block 3; WEEKS 10 & 12 Day 1- Core Synergistics and Run Day 2- Cardio X & Run Day 3- ARX and Run Day 4- Yoga and Run Day 5- Legs and Back, ARX Day 6- Run and X Stretch Day 7- Rest, X/ Stretch.

You will notice that the schedule eases into doubles for the second half of the schedule. By that time you will have a sense of how your body responds to the P90X workouts and can modify your runs as needed. Run workouts within this schedule should be scheduled according to your goals and abilities.

If you are closer to a race and time doesn't allow it, modify the schedule according to your needs. You could also transition from the classic schedule for a block to the lean schedule and then into a hybrid as above. As you get closer to peak racing season you may transition into running only, or incorporate yoga or core synergistics into a weekly schedule for maintenance and injury prevention.

There is a nutrition guide that comes with the program that is primarily designed to assist in losing weight and getting toned. This may be fine for some fitness runners, but more competitive runners will probably need to increase their carbohydrate intake, particularly if they are at or near their goal weight. Again, experimentation is recommended.

Consultation with your running coach or family physician may also be prudent depending on your circumstances.

Finding Your Way Through the Cricket Video Maze - Sports

Cricket videos have joined the online world. You can now find a vast range of video clips, live matches and cricket highlights online, to complement traditional VHS and DVD video. So, what's the advantage of all this choice? It's so easy to drown in the sea of video products. So, if you want to enjoy more cricket or inspire your junior cricketer, you'll need to be selective.

VHS tape and DVD cricket video are still popular, and don't have internet related transmission issues. So, it's worth considering them for your collection, but consider the picture quality of archive TV footage before you part with your money.

Remember that colour TV has only been around since the late 1960's, and that earlier black and white footage has variable quality. However, it's still worth considering archive material, to see some of the all time greats at work. For example, Sir Donald Bradman's 1993 video on how to play cricket includes footage of the master batsman at his best in 1934.

Picture quality improved through the VHS era in the 1980's. Good quality cricket video tapes are still available from around 1990, but the best quality pictures are on DVD. These formats are great for compilations of rare cricket occasions. For example, the 1960 tied test match between Australia and the West Indies at Brisbane was one of the all time great matches, and you can re-live the tension on a video from ABC TV sport.

Want to know what VHS and DVD titles are available? The top specialist retailers are listed in Google under "cricket video". But, with such global suppliers, beware of the "compatibility trap" for both DVD and VHS. You'll need to make sure that the rare video product that you ordered from 10 time zones away, is actually playable on your own hardware.

The world is divided into eight "DVD Regions", numbered 1 to 8. So, for example, a Region 3 DVD is only compatible with DVD players sold in Region 3. However, "Region Free" DVDs are the exception, and are compatible with players from any Region.

TV picture format is another complication. NTSC is the standard North American TV picture format and differs from the European PAL system. So, if you're in the USA or Canada (DVD Region 1), make sure that your TV can read the PAL signal before buying a European (Region 2) DVD.

Video tapes have the same issue. There are 3 global recording formats for commercial videos, NTSC, PAL and SECAM. If you're ordering a VHS tape from a far flung country, make sure that your TV can display it.

The internet takes cricket videos onto another level. Live international cricket and cricket highlights are now available online, and large volumes of archive material are available as cricket clips. As a coach, I'm particularly interested in the brilliant online coaching resources.

Free cricket clips and videos are abundant in the cricket sections of Google Video, You Tube and Metacafe. These range from beach cricket to events from classic test matches. You can have a fun time browsing through these, but finding exactly what you want in the maze of video offerings is less easy.

You need enough computing power to view online videos - broadband is essential, as is good PC performance. Your machine needs sufficient processor speed, enough RAM and a suitable video card to display videos quickly, smoothly and with good quality. You could test it on the BBC highlights or one of the samples on Google Video or You Tube.

You will also need a javascript enabled browser, and a suitable media player. Windows Media player is suitable for some online videos. Real Player and Flash are commonly used and are available as free downloads. The BBC Sport player is based on Real Player, and is available free from the BBC web site.

This rough guide to cricket videos highlights the main choices of product, where to find them, and some of the key technical issues involved. Of course, there's far more detail than this, but I hope that it gives you a start on finding a way through the video maze.
