Tips for redecorating your kitchen

Redecorating your kitchen isn't a task to be taken lightly if you intend to do extensive remodeling you may be faced with weeks eating takeaways and washing your dishes in the bath. If you don't want your lives disrupted for so long, here are some tips for redecorating your kitchen without calling in the carpenters.

A great way to change to look and feel of a room is to alter the lighting. First, look at your sources of natural light do you have windows and doors letting natural light into your kitchen? If so, are they obscured by thick drapes? Why not replace drapes with modern, stylish Venetian blinds these will allow more natural light to shine through into your kitchen, and they aren't a fire hazard (drapes can hang over benches and ovens where hot pans might catch the fabric).

You can also upgrade the lighting fixtures in your kitchen. If the roof is high, adding hanging lights will bring the light down to the level you need it, while making the room seem less cavernous. Wall-mounted lights can give a cosy feeling to any kitchen.

Next, consider the colour scheme of your kitchen. Could a lick of paint bring about the changes you desire? Remember, cool colours make a room relaxing, but a bold colour on one wall can create interest and add warmth to a large space. Don't be afraid to experiment with colour you can use a computer simulation program to test your colour schemes.

You might also like to brighten up your kitchen with some new knickknacks a fruit bowl in the centre of the table, some cat ornaments on the windowsill, and even a new microwave on top of the fridge, could instantly life the mood of your space.

When brainstorming ideas for redecorating your kitchen, read lots of design magazines and kitchen design blogs online, and create an "inspiration board" of all your favourite ideas. Separate your dream ideas from what you can realistically achieve, and get stuck in to redecorating it's a great creative project everyone in the family can help with!

Tips for Redecorating Your Living Room

Your house isn't a home without a living room there's a reason they called it the "living" room, after all. Your whole family can use the living room to watch TV, do homework, talk, play games, work on projects, relax and enjoy each other's company. But if your living room isn't warm and welcoming, you might find everyone holed up in his or her bedrooms. Here are some great tips for redecorating your living room.

Does your living room feel too small and pokey? If you can't knock out some walls to create open plan living, one thing you can do is create the illusion of more space. First, paint your walls a cool colour like a light blue or sea green. Then, replace your old, dowdy, heavy curtains with smart modern venetian blinds in a contrasting colour. Next, remove as much furniture as possible, and recover what remains to give each piece a new lease of life. Add a colourful beanbag and you've got a spacious and comfy living room.

But what if your living room is too large? Perhaps it feels sparse and uninviting. If so, you can easily fix this. Paint three walls in a neutral shade and cover the forth wall in a bold colour like bright red or blue. Hang some large, fun art pieces (large, bold colours like abstract art help balance your space), and add some funky modern furniture. Use rugs, carpets and tiles to break up the floor spaces into separate "pods" of activity. And finally, use roman or venetian blinds in matching colours to give a modern look to your old windows.

Lighting is also an important part of good living room design. In a small space, wall-mounted lights will add a cosy feel without cluttering the room, while hanging lights can reduce the size of a large room while adding interest and a bold splash of colour.

Before you start redecorating, stop and think about what you really want. Read design books and look at the displays and show homes and cut out pictures of what you like. Redecorating your living room will give your home a new, cosy vibe.

How to measure for your own blinds

If you want to install blinds in your home and are looking to cut costs wherever you can, you can save hundreds of dollars by measuring your windows yourself. If you're going to measure your windows yourself, you need a good tape measure and an exacting mind if you measure incorrectly, the blinds company will not be held responsible for your blinds not fitting. Here are some tips for measuring your own blinds.

Have another person assist you while you're measuring. They can hold one end of the tape measure or roman blind, or help you write down the measurements as you read them off. Having a second person acts as a check in case you accidentally get something wrong.

Most companies won't fit blinds made from measurements supplied by the customer. If you're measuring your own blinds, you will probably have to fit them yourself, so make sure you've chosen a blind you're comfortable fitting and that you understand exactly how the mechanism works in the window.

Also, be aware that many guarantees placed on blinds by manufacturers will be made null and void if you install your own blinds.

There are four types of measurements for blinds: inside fit, outside fit, three-dimensional fit and extended bracket fit. Your manufacturer should provide instructions for each. Follow the instructions carefully and give exactly what is asked. If you're unsure about an instruction, call the manufacturer and speak to a representative.

Give the company all your measurements in writing, either in a letter, an email or a fax. For extra security, type them out to ensure your handwriting isn't mistaken. Many companies will allow you to quote measurements and choose colours and styles from swatches online. This can be handy if you live far from a retail outlet.

Most companies strongly recommend their own measure and quote service, as this guarantees your blinds will be a perfect fit. Some companies even offer this service free. However, if this service doesn't fit with your plans, or you live too far away, or prefer to do the work yourself, it's not an impossible task to measure and hang your own blinds.

Tips for Cleaning Your Venetian Blinds

With proper care and maintenance, Venetian blinds can last a lifetime. Unlike curtains that can look worn after a few years of cleaning, Venetian blinds will always look pristine and stylish. But how do you look after your Venetian blinds.

It depends on which type of blinds you've purchased. Wooden Venetian blinds cannot be submerged or soaked in water, as this tends to warp the wood. Vinyl and aluminium blinds can, however, be cleaned in hot soapy water.

Like every other surface in your house, Venetian blinds collect dust. To clean away this dust, every time you vacuum, run the vacuum over your Venetian blinds on a low-power setting. Use a smaller nozzle and steady your vacuum cleaner with both hands so you don't damage your blinds. This should remove most of the collected dust.

To clean off any remaining dust or dirt, wipe with a damp, warm cloth. Don't use abrasive cleaners as these can react with the sealant in wooden blinds or the coating on vinyl or aluminium blinds.

Don't forget to clean the strings and hardware attachments too. And dust the windowsills above and below the window to prevent dust buildup around your blinds.

Every once in a while, you should give your blinds a thorough clean. To do this, remove your blinds from the wall and submerge in a bath of warm water and soap for 30 minutes. Clean any tough dirt and stains from your blinds with a soft brush. Drain the bathwater and use the shower head to remove any remaining soap. Then lay your blinds out to dry you could even use a hairdryer for speedy drying.

DO NOT do this if your blinds are wood or a wood composite, as you could split or warp the blinds. Instead, use the vacuum cleaner and damp (not wet) cloth, and if you're concerned, hire a professional blind cleaner.

With proper care and maintenance, no matter which blinds you have, you'll be able to make them last a lifetime. While curtains may tear or fade, a properly-maintained set of Venetian blinds will remain a modern, stylish window dressing in your home.

Aluminum venetian blinds are manufactured to the fact that people always wanted something that will surely last. In deciding to buy aluminum venetian blinds, you can choose for different types whether you like vertical or mini blinds. Specifically, aluminum venetian blinds look good if you put in a formal dining area.

Although aluminum venetian blinds are more expensive than vinyl blinds, it is much cheaper than wood blinds. If you prefer an aluminum mini blind, you can have it with 1 inch slat or much more with slats 2 to 3 inches wide. If you're shopping for your aluminum venetian blinds, there are lots of colors to choose from as well as to a number of different levels of confidentiality.

By using the standard cord to lower and raise the aluminum blind, you can opt to have battery operated feature to the blind. In having this kind of wireless feature, installing it is quite easy. Relatively, the motor is silent in operation, yet it's powerful. The 6 channel control can be operated to at least 6 aluminum blinds as long the distance is within 50 feet.
Also, aluminum blinds can offer energy efficiency. Window blinds with this kind of action can resist every heat loss through the window in time of cold seasons. If you like to cover your large window, aluminum blinds with larger slats are recommended. In keeping you preferred color of the aluminum blinds, there are lines that include metallic, solids, and matte, which can result to low gloss finish.

Venetian blinds are thin sheets of any material that are connected together by a string. Mostly of the venetian blinds are made up of hard plastics. There are also versions of venetian blinds that are made up of aluminum or any plastic combinations. Since blinds have very thin blades that shut and open, the strength and durability of the blades is a top priority of the manufacturers. Because of that, they do not simply use materials that do not pass their quality check.

There are two parts in the venetian blinds that are used to open and close it. One is the hanging stick that is being turned to open and close the blades of the blinds and the other one is the excess hanging string that is used to raise or pull the blinds up together. These two have special mechanisms that are placed on the upper portion of the blinds set. Basically, the one that lets the blind close, open and raise is the string that joins it together.

When blinds are always used everyday, the mechanism embodied in it may lower its function. This may be caused by the dust that can form on the small portion where the mechanism is located. When things like this occur you do not repair your venetian blind rather what you are going to do is to simply clean it.

Venetian blinds usually have warranties. The warranty may include miscarriage if delivered or mechanism failure before a certain date covered by the warranty. The very common wreck that may occur in a venetian blind is on the blades. Most of the time, plastic when over-exposed to sun becomes brittle and later on will corrode. That is too difficult to repair since you cannot find any spare to change for several affected blades.

The next common trouble in the venetian blinds is the string failure. Most of the time, because of the tension on the string during lifting, the string after some time might break. You can easily repair this by connecting the broken string together by tying it up or by using a strong adhesive. When the hanging rod does no longer turn smoothly, the problem maybe on the gear on the upper portion of the blinds set. Just simply apply a little of lubricant in it so it will again turn smoothly.

Always make sure that your blind is free of dust. Dust is the number one factor why the gears and other mechanism in your venetian blinds do not function. Make sure that when you repair the blind by yourself you do not void the warranty.
